معرفی
Nuno Faria is a Professor in Virus Genomic Epidemiology at the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, Imperial College London, where he co-leads the Pathogen Genomic Epidemiology theme. He also holds a Visiting Professor appointment at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, University of São Paulo, Brazil.
Education:
- PhD, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium (2010-2013)
Research Interests: Professor Faria specializes in viral genomic epidemiology across Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Evolutionary Biology, and Genetics. His work focuses on real-time genomic surveillance of rapidly evolving viruses including Zika, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, HIV, Ebola, and influenza, with emphasis on outbreak tracking and pandemic preparedness through nanopore sequencing technologies.
Scientific Awards:
- Wellcome Trust Sir Henry Dale Fellow
- Balliol Fellow in Sciences
Grants and Projects: He leads the DeZi Network (Wellcome Trust), FEEVIR project (WHO Berlin Hub), UK-Brazil Centre for Arbovirus Discovery (CADDE), ArboSPREAD project, and Zika in Brazil real-time analysis (ZiBRA). His research receives funding from MRC, FAPESP, British Council, Wellcome Trust, WHO, GCRF, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He serves on WHO Technical Advisory Groups for Arboviruses and Virus Evolution, and contributed to WHO's SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequencing implementation guide.
Labs and Teams: As co-leader of the Pathogen Genomic Epidemiology theme at the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis, he directs genomic outbreak response initiatives including the ZiBRA project that transformed real-time tracking of Zika in Brazil and developed the first WHO guide for viral genomic sequencing in public health emergencies.
