David Aanensen serves as a Visiting Professor in the School of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. He concurrently holds positions as Joint Faculty at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Director of the Centre for Genomic Pathogen Surveillance at the Wellcome Genome Campus, and Honorary Scientist at the University of Cambridge NHS Trust. His work bridges genomic research and public health implementation across multiple institutional frameworks.
His primary research focuses on applied genomic epidemiology through the development of translational bioinformatic tools for pathogen surveillance. Key areas include evolutionary and population biology of microorganisms using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS), with emphasis on real-time outbreak tracking for diseases like Ebola in Liberia and Rabies in India. His work integrates mobile data collection systems with genomic analysis to support global health initiatives.
Aanensen leads cross-institutional teams developing critical public health infrastructure. At Imperial, his group includes computational biologists and software engineers funded by Wellcome Trust and EU grants. His flagship project EpiCollect enables mobile data gathering for organizations like the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, while tools like BURST algorithm and Spatialepidemiology.net provide genomic analysis frameworks used in pathogen tracking across Africa and Asia. Collaborations span the Sanger Institute, University of Sydney, and global health agencies.
