Professor Dame Celia Hoyles is a renowned academic in Mathematics Education at University College London's IOE, where she has held the Chair of Mathematics Education since 1984. She is celebrated for her work in integrating computational thinking and digital technologies into mathematics education. Her research spans curriculum design, teacher professional development, and the use of dynamic software tools like Logo and ScratchMaths to enhance student engagement and conceptual understanding. Hoyles has led major initiatives, including the ScratchMaths project funded by the Education Endowment Fund and the Cornerstone Maths initiative, which aim to scale technology-enhanced teaching methods.
Her educational background includes a BSc in Mathematics (Manchester), PGCE and MEd (London), and a PhD in Mathematics Education (London). She has held pivotal roles such as Chief Adviser for Mathematics to the UK Government (2004–2007), Director of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (2007–2013), and President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (2014–2015). Hoyles has been honored with prestigious awards, including the Hans Freudenthal Medal (2004), Royal Society Kavli Education Medal (2011), and elevation to Dame Commander of the British Empire (2014).
Her research interests emphasize the role of technology in fostering algebraic reasoning, geometric understanding, and statistical literacy. She advocates for pedagogical approaches that respect students' diverse mathematical perspectives and leverage digital tools to make mathematics accessible and meaningful.
