Professor Rebecca Hoyle is an interdisciplinary mathematician at the University of Southampton, specializing in applying mathematical modelling to life and social sciences. As Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research), she leads initiatives to foster collaborative research. Her research focuses on multimorbidity lifecourse determinants, cooperation in social networks, and quantitative genetics of transgenerational effects. She co-leads the MELD-B project, leveraging AI to study early-onset multimorbidity, and explores dynamics of collaborative innovation. Hoyle has held roles in knowledge exchange, including co-founding the Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematical Sciences (VKEMS). Awards include the IMA Hedy Lamarr Prize (2021) and the IOP Rosalind Franklin Medal (2020).
Her work combines mathematical approaches with collaborations across psychology, evolutionary biology, and biophysics. Notable projects include studying maternal effects' evolutionary impacts and the role of personality traits in cooperative behavior. She has authored a textbook on pattern formation and contributed to understanding DNA unwinding mechanisms. Hoyle’s research spans epidemiology, social dynamics, and mathematical modeling of biological systems, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions to complex problems.
Recent articles highlight her focus on public health challenges, such as anti-vaccine opinion mitigation and early-life predictors of comorbidities. She actively supervises PhD students and promotes interdisciplinary training through teaching modules like Mathematical Biology. Her external roles include presenting at the Mary Cartwright Lecture (2017) and serving on panels to advance mathematical sciences impact.
