Ruben Sanchez-Garcia serves as an Associate Professor within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences. His academic profile demonstrates a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research bridging pure and applied mathematics.
Dr. Sanchez-Garcia completed his undergraduate studies in Mathematics at Universidad de Málaga (Spain), followed by a PhD at the University of Southampton. His postdoctoral career included positions at the University of Sheffield (UK) and University of Düsseldorf (Germany), establishing a robust international research foundation.
His research interests focus on network modelling and analysis alongside applied topology, with significant contributions to persistent homology and its applications. Current work explores the interface between pure mathematics and practical applications in data science, network theory, and biological systems. Recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in topological data analysis with applications spanning from network synchronization to medical research.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent pattern of interdisciplinary collaboration, with research spanning mathematical theory, network science applications, and biomedical data analysis. His work frequently appears in high-impact journals across mathematics, physics, and computational biology domains.
As an educator, Sanchez-Garcia has taught diverse modules including Mathematical Methods for Physical Scientists (MATH1007), Mathematics for Chemists and Oceanographers (MATH1004), Structure and Dynamics on Networks (MATH6140), and Galois Theory (MATH6078). He also serves as co-coordinator for self-paced mathematics modules (MATH1054 & MATH1055).
Currently supervising PhD students Kian Spencer (iPhD MINDS) and Ugur Bektas Canturk (PhD Mathematical Sciences), he actively accepts new PhD applicants. His research portfolio includes active projects like MELD-B (Multidisciplinary Ecosystem to study Lifecourse Determinants and Prevention of Burdensome Mid-life Multimorbidity) and completed projects including Automatic detection of genetic oscillators and Using network science to quantify the geometry of 'missingness'.
