Dr. Celia Martin Puertas is a Lecturer in Physical Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow. Her research focuses on reconstructing past climate variability using annually laminated lake sediments (varves), with an emphasis on North Atlantic and European climate dynamics during the Holocene. She investigates mechanisms driving extreme weather events and the Earth's response to solar, volcanic, and anthropogenic forcings. Celia employs a co-production approach involving policymakers and meteorological organizations to bridge paleoclimate data with societal applications.
- Education:
- PhD in Marine Sciences (Palaeolimnology and Palaeoclimatology), University of Cádiz (2008)
- MSc in Marine Sciences (Marine Geology), University of Cádiz (2004)
- BSc in Marine Sciences, University of Cádiz (2002)
Her research interests include paleoclimatology, lake sediment analysis, and interdisciplinary climate studies. Notable projects include the 'Rethinking Palaeoclimatology for Society' initiative and collaborations on Holocene climate evolution. Celia has received prestigious fellowships from the Royal Society, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and environmental sustainability. Recent publications focus on Holocene climate variability, lake ecosystem responses, and sea-level changes in coastal regions.
