Celia Antoniou is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Education at the University of Strathclyde, where she contributes to the TESOL team. Previously, she held Lecturer roles at the University of Portsmouth and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) since 2016. She has also collaborated with the Institute of Education, University College London (IOE), on research projects in applied linguistics and TESOL since 2018.
Her academic journey includes a BA in English Language and Linguistics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2009), an M.Phil. in Applied Linguistics from Trinity College Dublin (2011), and a PhD in Applied Linguistics and TESOL from the University of Essex (2016), funded by a Doctoral Research Scholarship. She has also served as an Impact Communications Officer at the UK Data Service.
Research Interests: Celia focuses on second language (L2) acquisition, multilingual education, and the role of emotions (e.g., anxiety, boredom) and motivation in language learning. She explores how sociocultural theory informs pedagogical practices, particularly through technology-enhanced learning. Her recent work addresses pandemic-era shifts to online teaching and the implications of generative AI in higher education.
Teaching & Supervision: She leads modules in TESOL, language pedagogy, and research methods at Strathclyde, including the MSc Dissertation and BA Dissertation supervision. She has supervised numerous postgraduate and doctoral students on topics like translanguaging, processing instruction, and AI in language education. Current research groups investigate learner/teacher emotions and AI's role in language learning.
Awards & Projects: Principal Investigator for the AI in Applied Linguistics and TESOL project (2025). Recognized with scholarships from Trinity College Dublin and the Irish Embassy. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).
