Candis Watts Smith is a Professor of Political Science at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on race, ethnicity, and their impact on American political dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Duke University (2011). Her work explores how demographic shifts influence political attitudes and policy preferences, with notable contributions to racial ideologies, healthcare access disparities, and minority student experiences.
Smith has led significant grants including the NSF-funded 'Contraception Deserts' project and the Mellon Foundation's Undergraduate Fellowship program. She teaches courses on racial politics, public policy, and minority representation. Her professional activities include co-hosting the Democracy Works Podcast and serving on Duke's Interdisciplinary Strategy Council. She previously served as Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (2023–2024).
