H. Timothy Lovelace Jr. is Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law and Professor of History in Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a J.D. (2006) and Ph.D. (2012) from the University of Virginia. His scholarship focuses on the legal history of the civil rights movement, critical race theory, and the intersection of domestic civil rights with international human rights frameworks.
Research examines:
- Transnational dimensions of civil rights activism
- Historical development of anti-discrimination law
- Corporate racial responsibility frameworks
- Legal responses to political extremism
Professor Lovelace's publications demonstrate extensive engagement with civil rights historiography, UN conventions on racial equality, and contemporary racial justice movements. His 2022 scholarship includes analyses of the January 6th insurrection's historical roots and theoretical connections between domestic anti-racism and global human rights advocacy. Earlier work explores Cold War-era civil liberties conflicts and the role of organizations like SNCC in shaping international human rights instruments.
He currently leads a Bass Connections research team on racial justice and received the 2022 Racial Inequality Research Grant from Duke's Office of the Provost for work on corporate racial equity. Teaches courses including 'Race and the Law' and 'Legal History of the Civil Rights Movement'.
