Martin Paul Smith is an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Education at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He serves as Director of Duke’s Secondary Teacher Preparation Program and Faculty Director of the DukeEngage Boston Summer Literacy Program. His roles include Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and Dean of Academic Affairs of Trinity College (2020–2024). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin (2015).
Smith’s research focuses on race, education, and the intersection of sport and societal narratives. His work examines systemic racism in educational institutions, Black male brilliance, and the experiences of African American student-athletes. Recent publications analyze historical and contemporary racial dynamics in schooling and sport, leveraging critical race theory and Bourdieu’s habitus framework.
His teaching includes courses like Race, Power, and Identity: From Ali to Kaepernick and leadership in Bass Connections’ Race & Society Research Team. He emphasizes anti-racist pedagogy and community engagement through Duke’s outreach programs.
