Dr. Camilla Smith is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK. She holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (2007) and has held academic roles since 2008. Her research focuses on early 20th-century German and Austrian culture, with specializations in Weimar Republic visual culture, National Socialist dissent, and gender/sexuality studies. She has received prestigious fellowships including the Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND Fellowship and DAAD funding.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and postgraduate modules such as 'Art, Architecture and Design in Fin-de-Siècle Vienna' and 'The Body and its Representation.' She also contributes to cross-disciplinary programs in Modern Languages and Gender Studies. Her pedagogical excellence was recognized through two teaching awards (2011, 2019).
Recent research explores erotic visual culture in interwar Germany and the career of artist Jeanne Mammen under Nazi rule. Current projects investigate continuities in erotic material production across Weimar and National Socialist eras. Her work bridges art history with social history, examining censorship, identity formation, and cultural resistance.
