His research spans twentieth-century German/Austrian literature and interwar photography, particularly photobooks as cultural responses to Weimar social upheaval.
Key projects include:
- Weimar Photobooks: Analyzing works by Moholy-Nagy, Tucholsky, and Sander to explore politics, speed, and modernity
- Literature/Photography Integration: Studying textual-visual hybrids in authors like Brecht, Sebald, and Maron
Publications include monographs on W.G. Sebald (2007) and Thomas Bernhard (2001), alongside edited volumes like Time in German Literature and Culture (2015). Long's articles investigate facial representation in Weimar culture, paratexts in Brecht's photobooks, and Cold War visual politics.
