معرفی
Dr. Paul Whitehead is a Research Associate at the German Institute within the Faculty of Philosophy and Philology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His academic profile centers on German literary studies with specialization in contemporary and modern German literature, particularly the works of W.G. Sebald and Heinrich Mann. His research spans literary history from the early 19th century to the present, encompassing Biedermeier, pre- and post-March periods, classical modernism, literature after 1945, and 'post-secular' narrative works.
Dr. Whitehead earned his doctorate in August 2017 with the study "On the Sidelines: WG Sebald's Aesthetics of the Marginal" (published in 2019 by Aisthesis Verlag). His academic foundation includes a Magister Artium in German Philology and Romance Studies from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (2006-2009) and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Modern and Medieval Languages from St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford (2001-2005).
His scholarly interests encompass literary studies as cultural studies, intertextuality, materiality and mediality, hermeneutics, editorial philology, genre theory, and reception research. Dr. Whitehead has developed significant expertise in analyzing marginality, memory, and spatial representation in German literature, with particular focus on W.G. Sebald's aesthetics and Heinrich Mann's political engagement during the Weimar Republic. His work consistently bridges literary analysis with cultural and historical contexts.
Dr. Whitehead's publication record demonstrates a cohesive research trajectory examining how literature engages with memory, identity, and historical representation. His recent work shows increasing attention to visual cultures, text-image relationships, and the representation of disasters in contemporary literature, while maintaining his foundational expertise in 20th century German authors.
- S. Fischer Fellowship (Post-Doc) for Author and Publishing History, German Literature Archive Marbach (2018)
- Doctoral scholarship from the Cusanuswerk (2010-2014)
As an active educator, Dr. Whitehead teaches graduate courses on Heinrich Heine, WG Sebald, visual cultures of remembrance, and cultural studies. His upcoming courses through 2025/26 reflect his dual expertise in literary history and theoretical approaches. He regularly presents at international conferences and serves on academic committees through his memberships in the Heinrich Mann-Gesellschaft, Internationale Vereinigung für Germanistik, and Deutsche Sebald Gesellschaft. His Erasmus+ guest lectureship at the Università degli Studi di Milano in March 2024 demonstrates his international scholarly engagement.
Dr. Whitehead maintains an active research agenda with current projects including a contribution to the anthology "Accumulated Time. Decay, Spatial Poetics, and Linguistic Critique in Katharina Hacker's The Lifeguard" (forthcoming 2025), continuing his exploration of spatial poetics and memory representation in contemporary German literature.
