Jo Catling is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Fellow at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing and the British Centre for Literary Translation. She has taught at Oxford, Durham, and Newcastle before joining UEA in 1993, where she has played a key role in shaping the Comparative Literature programmes.
Her research focuses on modern German literature, particularly the works of W.G. Sebald and Rainer Maria Rilke, women's writing, gender and creativity, and literary translation. She has made significant contributions through her editorial and translation work, especially on Sebald's essays.
The recent research articles reflect a consistent engagement with W.G. Sebald, archival materials, Holocaust memory, and translation theory. Her work bridges German and English literary traditions, with a strong emphasis on ethical and aesthetic dimensions of writing and translation.

Jo Catling has supervised and continues to accept PhD students, particularly in areas related to Sebald, Rilke, and women’s writing. She has led externally funded research projects such as the translation of Sebald’s Austrian essays and co-edited major scholarly handbooks. Her academic service includes organizing international conferences and contributing to collaborative research networks.
She is a core member of the British Centre for Literary Translation Research Group and has contributed to shaping postgraduate and undergraduate curricula in European literature, modernism, and women’s writing at UEA.
