Roles and Affiliations: Karine Winkelvoss is a Professor of German Literature at the University of Rouen Normandy, affiliated with the ERIAC (Équipe de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Arts et les Cultures). She holds the rank of Professor and belongs to the 12th section of the French academic system. Her research focuses on intersections between literature, visual arts, and cultural studies, particularly on authors like WG Sebald, Rilke, and Aby Warburg. She currently co-directs the German Department at Rouen and serves as co-director of ERIAC's research axis on 'Forms, Experiences, Interpretations.'
Education and Career: A former student of the École Normale Supérieure (1992-1998), she earned a PhD in German Literature from Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle (2001). Recognized for her scholarship, she was awarded the John Jaffé Prize (2002) and held research fellowships at the Humboldt Foundation (2015-2018) and Gerda Henkel Foundation (2011-2013). She has held leadership roles, including Deputy Director of ERIAC (2019-2023) and Director of Rouen’s German Department (2010–present).
Research Interests: Her work explores pathos in literature, memory studies, and intermediality. Notable contributions include monographs such as WG Sebald. Forms of Pathos (2022) and WG Sebald, The Economy of Pathos (2021), which analyze Sebald’s stylistic and ethical dimensions. She also investigates Rilke’s poetics, visual theory, and affective politics.
Key Publications and Recognition: Over 20 books and peer-reviewed articles, including contributions to Weimarer Beiträge, Critique, and Germanic Studies. Her work has been reviewed in major journals and conferences. She is a member of editorial boards and serves on prize juries, including the Prix Pierre Grappin for German Studies theses.
Teaching and Outreach: Teaches German literature, visual arts, and translation at undergraduate and graduate levels. Active in public engagement, she participates in festivals and radio discussions, such as France Culture’s Rilke – Rodin (2014). She co-founded the Stolpersteine project in Rouen, memorializing Holocaust victims through public art.
