Erin R. Hochman is an Associate Professor of History at Southern Methodist University (SMU), specializing in modern German and Austrian history. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (2010) and a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis.
Her research focuses on the intersections of nationalism, republicanism, and democracy in interwar Central Europe, particularly exploring how republican movements in the Weimar Republic and First Austrian Republic countered exclusionary nationalist ideologies. Key works include Imagining a Greater Germany (2016), which examines the role of republican nationalism in legitimizing democracy, and articles analyzing the political culture of the First Austrian Republic and Weimar-era Germany.
Dr. Hochman has been awarded prestigious honors such as the Hans Rosenberg Prize and Radomír Luža Prize for her scholarly contributions. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on modern European history, German history from 1871, the Holocaust, and the Weimar Republic.
Current research projects include Germany Unbound, investigating German diaspora politics in the Weimar and Nazi eras. She actively contributes to academic networks through grants and fellowships from institutions like the American Historical Association and SMU’s University Research Council.
