Dr. Brooke E. Christian serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences at Appalachian State University, where she has taught since 2015. Her instructional responsibilities include Biochemistry I/II, associated laboratories, Introduction to Chemical Research, and General Chemistry I Laboratory.
She holds a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2010), with dissertation research on mammalian mitochondrial translation initiation mechanisms, and a B.S. in Chemistry from Appalachian State University (2005). Prior to her current appointment, she completed an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine investigating mitochondrial reactive oxygen species in Ataxia-Telangiectasia.
Dr. Christian's research program centers on cellular stress induced by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS), with three primary projects: (1) mtROS effects on oxidative phosphorylation complex assembly using tissue culture and animal models with mitochondrial superoxide dismutase/catalase systems; (2) adipocyte differentiation mechanisms targeting childhood obesity interventions; and (3) application of tardigrade-specific proteins for room-temperature stabilization of protein therapeutics. Her laboratory employs techniques including western blotting, qPCR, blue native PAGE, shRNA knockdown, immunofluorescence, and subcellular fractionation.
The Christian Lab operates as an active research group within the department, integrating biochemical and cell biological approaches to address fundamental questions in mitochondrial physiology and therapeutic development. Dr. Christian maintains her office in GWH 465 and can be contacted via university phone system (828) 262-2961.
