Brian Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century Literature at King’s College London, based in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He holds a PhD from King’s College London (2011) and previously served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge (2012–2015) on an ERC-funded project exploring biblical influences on 19th-century culture.
His research focuses on travel writing, religion, empire, and the reception of classical/biblical traditions in the Victorian era. Current projects include a monograph on H.M. Stanley’s exploration narratives and an analysis of martyrology’s persistence in 19th-century literature. He collaborates with contemporary visual artists, including exhibitions at Lewisham Art House and Glasgow’s Intermedia.
Teaching includes courses on Victorian poetry, fin-de-siècle culture, and London’s literary modernity. He convenes the MA in Modern Literature and Culture, emphasizing textual analysis and urban studies.
Publications span monographs, edited collections, and peer-reviewed articles on topics like imperial martyrdom, biblical reception, and colonial commodities. Recent works include *Scripture and Song in Nineteenth-Century Britain* (2023) and *Chosen Peoples: The Bible, Race and Empire* (2020).
