Dr. Michael Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in English Studies at the University of Stirling, specializing in 19th and early-20th century Scottish literature and cultural history. He holds a fellowship from the Higher Education Academy and directs the Scottish Centre for Victorian and Neo-Victorian Studies. Previously, he served as a Research Assistant on the Carnegie-funded 'The People's Voice' project and held a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University's Beinecke Library. His research focuses on literary decadence, Celtic Revival, and queer representation in Scottish periodicals.
Shaw's educational background includes a MA and PhD from the University of Glasgow, and a MA from Royal Holloway, University of London. His work explores intersections of cosmopolitanism, nationalism, and cultural identity in Scottish literature. He has edited volumes such as Robert Louis Stevenson and J.M. Barrie's Correspondence and led projects funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Current research examines representations of homosexuality in Scottish literature (1885–1928).
He advises three PhD students researching modern Scottish poetry, library history, and Jane Austen adaptations. Shaw has contributed to grants including the 'Scottish Revival Network' and 'Scottish Cosmopolitanism at the Fin de Siècle.' His published works span monographs, journal articles, and edited collections, reflecting his expertise in Victorian/Scottish literary studies.
