Dr. Alex Murray is a Professor of Modern Literature at Queen's University Belfast, School of Arts, English and Languages. His research focuses on British and American literature (1880–1940), particularly Decadence, modernism, and the intersections of literature with place, politics, and religion. He has authored five monographs, including Decadent Conservatism (2023) and Landscapes of Decadence (2016), and edited nine collections. Murray is co-founder of the journal Cusp (Johns Hopkins UP) and has held fellowships including a Leverhulme Research Fellowship.
- Education: BA/PhD in English Literature, University of Melbourne.
- Roles: External Examiner for University of Liverpool, Queen Mary University of London, and others.
Research Interests: Decadence, modernism, Oscar Wilde, literature and urban spaces (London/New York), and the politics of literary form. His work explores how literary aesthetics engage with conservatism, imperialism, and historiography.
Publications span over 70 articles, including studies on Michael Field, Vernon Lee, and John Dos Passos. Recent work includes an edited volume on Wilde (Oxford UP, 2025) and a Leverhulme-funded project on fin-de-siècle literary historiography.
Awards: Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2024), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2009).
