Patrick McGuinness is a Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Oxford, affiliated with St Anne's College. His research focuses on 19th-21st century French literature, Belgian Symbolism, and comparative studies between French and Anglo-American Modernism. He holds a Leverhulme Fellowship (2025) and has contributed to major works including Symbols and Decadence as World Literature (2026) and Poetry and Radical Politics in fin de siècle France (2015). His teaching spans French language, comparative literature, and translation studies.
Research interests include French poetry, theatre, Belgian Francophone literature, and the intersection of translation and cultural politics. He is currently writing Against Epiphanies (Oxford UP) on poetry's ordinary forms. McGuinness has authored novels, poetry collections, and critical editions, including translations of Mallarmé and Hélène Dorion. His creative works include Blood Feather (2023), a poetry collection, and the novel Throw Me to the Wolves (2019), which earned the Encore Award.
