Boris Turk is a Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, and Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular and Structural Biology at the J. Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He has held academic and research roles since 1993, including leadership positions in prestigious institutions and centers of excellence such as the Center of Excellence for Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies (2011-2013) and the Center of Excellence for Integrated Approaches in Chemistry and Biology of Proteins (2011-2017). His research focuses on proteolysis, cysteine cathepsins, and their roles in cellular processes like autophagy, cancer, and protease signaling.
- Education & Early Career: Postdoctoral Fellowships at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (1994-1996) supported by FEBS and Wenner-Gren.
- Leadership: President of the International Proteolysis Society (2011-2013), and long-term department head at J. Stefan Institute.
Research Interests: His work bridges chemical biology and molecular mechanisms of cell death, lysosomal biology, and cancer biology. Key areas include understanding intracellular protease signaling pathways and their implications in disease.
- Awards: Zois Award (2011), EMBO membership (2007), and grants from Human Frontier Science Program (2006).
Grants & Collaborations: Led an international project on protease signaling with grants from HFSP (2006) and has maintained collaborative research networks across Europe. His roles in centers of excellence highlight interdisciplinary research integration.
Labs & Teams: Directs research activities at J. Stefan Institute’s Department of Biochemistry, fostering studies on proteases’ roles in cellular processes.
