Betsy Lewis is a Professor of Spanish in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Mary Washington (UMW). She serves as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and focuses on women writers, gender issues, and cultural history in 18th- and 19th-century Spain. Her research spans literary analysis, digital humanities, and historical ethnography.

Lewis’s recent publications and research projects examine women’s roles in Enlightenment-era Spain, including charitable work, motherhood discourses, and educational philosophies. Her digital humanities project 'Women and Charity in Spain, 1786-1939' (funded by the Mary Washington Faculty Development Grant) explores archival materials through interdisciplinary lenses.
She collaborates extensively with undergraduate research students, including Maddy Woodard, Elisa Luckabaugh, and Adrian Coello, on digital humanities initiatives. Lewis is an elected member of the Council on Undergraduate Research's Arts Humanities Division and actively contributes to academic organizations like the Modern Language Association of America and the American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies.
