Jose A. Sainz is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Director of the Center for International Education at the University of Mary Washington (UMW). He holds a Ph.D. in Peninsular Spanish Literature from the University of Maryland, an M.A. in Foreign Languages and Spanish Literature from West Virginia University, and a Licenciatura in English Philology from Universidad de Deusto, Spain.

His scholarly work focuses on exile studies, testimony, and autobiographical narratives tied to the Spanish Civil War, with publications in journals like La Nueva Literatura Hispánica. He also contributes expertise in 20th-century Spain’s history, politics, and culture, teaching courses on Spanish language, cinema, and translation.
As Director of UMW’s Center for International Education, he supports study abroad initiatives and has assisted international students, particularly from Latin America, through media features and outreach. His professional memberships include the Modern Language Association and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
