Beth Stormshak is the Philip H. Knight Chair and Professor in the Counseling Psychology and Human Services department within the College of Education at the University of Oregon. She holds a PhD in Child Clinical Psychology from Pennsylvania State University (1995), an MS in Clinical Psychology from the same institution (1992), and a BA in Psychology from the University of Washington (1988).
Dr. Stormshak's research program focuses on understanding risk factors in early and middle childhood associated with the development of problem behavior in late adolescence, including substance use and delinquency. Her primary research centers on testing the efficacy of family-centered interventions, particularly the Family Check-Up, which reduces later risk of problem behavior. She has pioneered the development of an online version of the Family Check-Up for wide-scale dissemination and studies the process of implementing evidence-based interventions into real-world community settings. Her work involves extensive collaboration with elementary and middle schools throughout Oregon and community mental health agencies.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on digital delivery of parenting interventions, with numerous studies examining the Family Check-Up's effects across different developmental stages from early childhood through adolescence. Her research consistently demonstrates how family-centered prevention can improve parenting skills, reduce conduct problems, and address mental health concerns like depression among youth.
