Dr. Cindy Huang is an Associate Professor in Counseling Psychology and Human Services at the University of Oregon’s College of Education. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, completed clinical training at Yale University School of Medicine, and has held prior faculty positions at Columbia University. Her research focuses on cultural factors influencing mental health outcomes for racial/ethnic minority and immigrant youth, particularly Asian Americans, emphasizing culturally informed interventions and family dynamics. She leads the CHAMPLAB (Cultural Health and Mental Health Promotion Lab) and has received grants from NYC Health, NICHD, and NIMH.
Education: Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology (University of Oregon), MA in Clinical Psychology (San Diego State University), BA in Psychology (San Diego State University). Postdoctoral training includes Yale University’s Prevention and Community Research Division and UC Davis’ cultural psychology fellowship.
Research interests include cultural risk/protective factors, parenting practices among immigrants, mental health disparities, and suicide prevention adaptations for Asian American adolescents. Her interventions aim to bridge cultural competence and evidence-based practices.
Awards include the NYC Department of Health grant for suicide prevention (2023–present), NIMH CHIPS Fellowship (2015), and multiple grants addressing health disparities. She advises doctoral students in Counseling Psychology and Prevention Science.
Key grants include a multi-year project adapting the Family Check-Up for Asian American suicide prevention. Her lab collaborates with communities to develop culturally responsive programs for immigrant populations.
