Dr. Beth Chandler Cahill is a Professor of Flute and Woodwind Area Coordinator at James Madison University's School of Music. She is renowned for her versatility as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, and educator. Her career includes performances at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center and international festivals such as the Midwest Clinic and Rio de Janeiro's Música no Museu Festival. She has held faculty positions at the University of Florida and the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, and maintains an active private teaching presence. Dr. Cahill has received numerous awards, including the JMU Teaching Award and Fulbright Scholarship, and has released the album TIME PLACE SPIRIT on MSR Classics.
Education: B.M. (magna cum laude) from Baylor University, M.M. from New England Conservatory, and D.M.A. in Flute Performance from University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with a cognate in Arts Administration. Her teachers include Helen Ann Shanley, Paula Robison, and Trevor Wye.
Research interests focus on flute performance, pedagogy, and arts administration. She leads the Bluestone Winds, JMU's faculty woodwind quintet, and serves as a member of the Flute Society of Washington. Professional service includes presidency of the National Flute Association (2012–2014) and roles on its Board of Directors and committees.
Advancing her students' success, Dr. Cahill has mentored musicians achieving top competitions, graduate programs, and professional roles. She advises JMU's Flute Club and emphasizes community engagement through clinics and educational outreach.
