Dr. Ben Lewis is a Lecturer in German Language Education and Language Co-ordinator at King's College London (KCL), providing maternity cover until March 2022. He specializes in German political thought (1871–1945) and socialism, with additional affiliations at the University of Leeds (School of Modern Languages and Cultures) and the University of Sheffield (Germanic Studies). His research focuses on Marxist intellectual history, including the works of Karl Kautsky, Rosa Luxemburg, and Oswald Spengler. He has authored or co-edited volumes on figures like Clara Zetkin and Karl Kautsky, and coordinates the 'Marxism Translated' project. Lewis’s academic career includes teaching at the University of Sheffield, Bangor University, and the Open University.
Education: Studied German at the University of Sheffield and University of Bonn, graduating with a first-class degree. Completed an MA (Distinction, 2015) and PhD (under Henk de Berg, University of Sheffield) on Oswald Spengler’s politics, resulting in the book Oswald Spengler and the Politics of Decline (2022).
Research interests span German political thought, socialism, and Marxist theory. He has translated works such as Repressed, Remitted, Rejected: German Reparations Debts to Poland and Greece (2021) and co-edited volumes on European socialist thinkers. His publications analyze historical debates on democracy, revolutionary strategy, and labor movements.
Active in academic communities, Lewis contributes to projects like the Prokhorov Centre (Sheffield) and has presented at international conferences on topics such as Rosa Luxemburg’s democratic vision and the legacy of Karl Kautsky. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary Marxist discourse.
