Henk de Berg is Professor of German at the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies. Born in the Netherlands, he studied German and comparative literature at Leiden University and Universität Siegen before joining Sheffield in 1996. He directs the Prokhorov Centre, organizing lectures by global intellectuals like Sir Christopher Clark and Marina Warner.
His research bridges cultural theory, political thought, and intellectual history, focusing on figures like Hegel, Freud, and contemporary populist movements. Current projects include a book analyzing Germany's AfD party, examining its cultural drivers and neo-paleo gender dynamics.
Awarded the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title for his work on Freud, he teaches modules on German intellectual history ('Modern German Thought') and Weimar-era social history ('The Restless Era'). He supervises postgraduate research across his expertise areas.
