David L. Marshall is a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, specializing in intellectual history with a focus on rhetoric's evolution in early modern and Weimar-era contexts. He serves as Co-Director of the Humanities Center alongside Carla Nappi. His research examines figures like Giambattista Vico, Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, and Walter Benjamin, exploring how rhetoric intertwines with modern disciplines like philosophy and political theory. Marshall holds a PhD in Intellectual History from The Johns Hopkins University.
His work bridges historical and theoretical inquiry, advocating for 'contemporary intellectual history' as a method for critically engaging foundational thinkers. He teaches graduate seminars such as 'Inventing Your Tradition' and undergraduate courses like 'Theories of Persuasion.' His publications include Vico and the Transformation of Rhetoric in Early Modern Europe (2010) and The Weimar Origins of Rhetorical Inquiry (2020), alongside peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from Vico's aphorisms to Warburgian visual rhetoric.
Marshall's scholarship emphasizes interdisciplinary connections between rhetoric, politics, and aesthetics. Current projects continue developing his methodological framework while engaging with visual studies and contemporary applications of historical thought. His office is located in 1417 Cathedral of Learning, and he actively participates in academic social media platforms for the COMMRC department.
