Michael L. Meng is an Associate Professor of History and M.A. Program Director at Clemson University’s Department of History within the College of Arts and Humanities. His research focuses on European History, Central Europe, Intellectual History, Religion, and Philosophy, with recent work on figures like Heidegger and Celan. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2008), an M.A. from the same institution (2004), and a B.A. from Boston College (2001, summa cum laude).
Key research areas include Holocaust memory, German-Jewish relations, and the intersection of philosophy and political thought. His publications span books such as Revolutionary Biopolitics from Fedorov to Mao (2023) and Shattered Spaces: Encountering Jewish Ruins in Postwar Germany and Poland (2011), alongside numerous journal articles. Meng has received major awards, including the Laura Shannon Book Prize (2013) and the Hans Rosenberg Book Prize (2012).
His articles explore topics like Heidegger’s antisemitism, postwar Jewish spaces, and authoritarianism in German history. Engagements include fellowships from the Charles H. Revson Foundation and the American Council on Germany. Meng’s work bridges intellectual history with modern political and cultural dynamics, emphasizing memory, identity, and transnational perspectives.
