Dr Ben Lewis is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Leeds, School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. He specializes in German social and intellectual history, with a focus on political thought between 1871–1945, Marxism, European social democracy, and gender politics. He has taught at the University of Sheffield, University of Huddersfield, the Open University, and served as Lecturer in German Language Education and Language Co-ordinator at King’s College London.

His research centers on German political thought, particularly the works of Karl Kautsky, Rosa Luxemburg, and Oswald Spengler. He has published extensively in journals such as Historical Materialism, Critique, and European Review, with key interests in democratic theory, revolutionary movements, and the history of socialist thought. His current book project is titled Of Comradeship and Sisterhood: A Political History of ‘Die Gleichheit’ (1891–1917).
His 15 most recent publications reflect a strong thematic focus on democratic centralism, referenda, socialist strategy, and the intellectual legacies of key Marxist figures. These works span historical analysis, translation, and theoretical commentary, with recurring subfields including social democracy, revolutionary theory, party organization, and republicanism.
Dr Lewis is the founder and coordinator of the Patreon-based research project and podcast Marxism Translated, dedicated to translating and discussing social-democratic texts from 1871–1945. He has translated and edited multiple volumes of socialist texts and is a member of the Prokhorov Centre in Sheffield, focusing on Central and Eastern European intellectual history. His collaborative work includes the English edition of Rosa Luxemburg’s Gesammelte Werke. His research has been translated into several languages, including German, Spanish, and Farsi.
