She is affiliated with the School of Culture and Society and serves as Chair of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina – Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften.
Professor Wessely's research spans cultural history, intellectual history, and critical theory, with particular focus on German intellectual traditions, the history of ecology, and the sociology of knowledge. Her work examines how cultural formations shape scientific thought and social practices, particularly in German contexts from the 19th century to the present. She investigates topics including critical theory, historical morphology, emotional history, and the conceptual frameworks that structure our understanding of nature and society.
Her recent publications and presentations reveal a strong engagement with contemporary ecological concerns through historical lenses, examining how concepts of nature, ecology, and the Anthropocene have evolved. She frequently explores the intersections between scientific thought, political theory, and cultural practices, with special attention to German intellectual history from figures like Oswald Spengler and Karl Mannheim to the Frankfurt School. Her work demonstrates how historical perspectives can illuminate current debates about knowledge production and environmental challenges.
Professor Wessely is an active organizer of academic events, including the 2024 GWMT conference on the history of science, medicine and technology, and has presented numerous talks on subjects ranging from the history of motherhood to national ecology around 1871. Her research demonstrates consistent engagement with both theoretical frameworks and concrete historical case studies that bridge disciplinary boundaries.
She has organized significant conferences including "Im Vorraum des Denkens. Praktiken und Lebenswelten kritischer Theorie" (2017) and "Neapolitanische Moderne" (2017), demonstrating her commitment to fostering international scholarly dialogue across disciplinary boundaries. Her work with the DFG Research Training Group "Cultures of Critique" represents an ongoing institutional commitment to advancing research in critical theory and cultural history.
