Anna Petrig is a Professor of International Law and Public Law at the University of Basel since 2017. Her expertise spans maritime law (especially security, human rights at sea, and autonomous systems), international humanitarian law, law of international organizations, and the interplay between international and national legal systems.
Education: LL.M. from Harvard Law School (Fulbright Scholar, 2007); Doctorate in Human Rights at Sea (University of Basel, 2013); Law degree specializing in European law (University of Friborg, 2003). Professional highlights include serving on Friborg’s Constitutional Council (2002-2005), legal work with the ICRC, and postdoc research at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and Max Planck Institute.
Research interests emphasize legal frameworks for emerging maritime technologies, maritime security governance, and human rights protection in maritime contexts. Her work bridges international legal norms with practical implementation challenges.
Awards include the Fulbright Scholarship and SNF Postdoc Mobility Scholarship. Active in interdisciplinary projects addressing maritime decarbonization, autonomous systems regulation, and socio-economic dimensions of maritime transport.
Advising roles include mentoring graduate students in international law and maritime policy. Collaborates globally on initiatives such as the IAMU Conference and EU-funded maritime innovation projects.
