John Cerone is a Visiting Professor of International Law at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He joined the faculty in 2013 after holding prior positions including the Paul Martin Senior Professorship at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law and Visiting Chair roles at Lund University and the New England School of Law. His expertise spans international law, human rights, humanitarian law, and conflict zones, with extensive field experience in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, and East Timor.
Professional Background: Cerone has served as a legal adviser to international criminal tribunals, worked with organizations like the UN, OSCE, Amnesty International, and the International Crisis Group, and held fellowships at the Nobel Institute, Max Planck Institute, and Raoul Wallenberg Institute. He is an elected member of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) and has advised the first U.S. delegation to the UN Human Rights Council.
Research Interests: His work focuses on human rights litigation, soft law mechanisms, accountability for chemical weapons use, legal frameworks in occupied territories, and migration law. He has authored over 50 articles, textbooks like International Law (Carolina Academic Press, 2019), and co-edited International Humanitarian Law (Edward Elgar, 2017).
Awards & Recognition: Recipient of the President’s Award from the Boston Bar Association for his work on Guantanamo Bay litigation and a Fulbright Scholar appointment. His lectures span global institutions, including NATO Headquarters, the ICRC Annual Course, and the U.S. Naval War College.
Teaching: He teaches courses on international legal systems, human rights, migration law, and criminal justice, with a global reach spanning over 40 countries. Recent courses include Current Issues in Human Rights and International Law & Migration.
Expert Contributions: Served on expert groups for the ICRC and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and delivered keynote addresses at the 2016 UNDP Transitional Justice Conference in Kathmandu.
