Vanessa Topp serves as Assistant Lecturer at Essex Law School, University of Essex, while concurrently pursuing SeNSS DTP-funded doctoral research at the Human Rights Centre. She also holds Research Officer positions on critical projects including “Speech Crimes in International Criminal Law” and previously contributed to the Modern Slavery Policy and Evidence Centre’s prison reform initiative.

Research Focus: Her socio-legal scholarship examines intersections of international human rights law, humanitarian law, refugee law, and criminal law, with emphasis on criminalization of humanitarian aid for migrants in the EU. Field experience in Somalia, Kenya, Palestine, France, Greece, and Jordan informs her practical approach to migration governance and human rights protection.
Publication Trends: Recent works address systemic gaps in human rights enforcement, analyzing modern slavery survivor treatment in UK prisons and accountability mechanisms for military special forces. These reflect her commitment to translating legal frameworks into tangible protections for vulnerable populations through empirical socio-legal research.

Research Engagement: Supervised by Professor Geoff Gilbert, Dr. Matthew Gillett, and Dr. Esin Küçük for her PhD, she contributes to UN-affiliated initiatives including the Arbitrary Detention Redress Unit. Current projects examine digital-era speech crimes and prison reform, funded through competitive research councils and policy centers.
Collaborative Units: Actively participates in the Digital Verification Unit with Amnesty International and previously collaborated with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Conflict during her LLM studies.
