Dr Andrew Papworth is a part-time Research Associate in the ESRC Vulnerabilities and Policing Futures Research Centre and an ESRC New Investigator at the University of York's School for Business and Society. His work focuses on police interactions with vulnerable populations, including modern slavery prevention and drug use policy.
His educational background includes a PhD in Geography from University College London (2018), an MSc in Health Sciences from the University of York (2013), and a BA from Durham University (2007).

Papworth's research spans vulnerability and policing, substance use disorders, paediatric palliative care, and indigenous health. He employs mixed-methods approaches with vulnerable populations including drug users, children with life-limiting conditions, and Nicaragua's Rama indigenous group. Current projects include the ESRC-funded INTERPRET study on police-drug user interactions and UK modern slavery research.
Analysis of his 40+ publications reveals strong thematic clusters in paediatric end-of-life care (2022-2025), substance use policy (2024-2025), and indigenous environmental justice (2016-2024), with increasing focus on policing vulnerabilities since 2023.

Papworth contributes to teaching as a Guest Lecturer in Environmental Justice and Social Policy at York, and previously taught Children's Palliative Care at Hull York Medical School. He is embedded in the ESRC Vulnerabilities and Policing Futures Research Centre and collaborates across York's Health Sciences and Social Policy departments, with extensive international connections evidenced by his University of Virginia visiting scholarship.
