Professor Sharon Grace is a leading academic in Criminal Justice and Social Policy at the University of York's School for Business and Society. She holds the position of Deputy Dean for Integration and chairs the Equality and Diversity Committee. Her career spans over 30 years, including roles at the Home Office Research and Planning Unit and the Crown Prosecution Service. She transitioned to full-time academia in 2005, developing curricula and launching York's BA in Criminology. Her research focuses on women's experiences in the criminal justice system, drug policy, and policing strategies. She co-leads the ESRC-funded Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre and is a founder of the Criminal Women: Voice, Justice and Recognition network.
Education: BSocSc (Manchester), MA(Econ) (Manchester). Research interests include drug-using women offenders, interventions for vulnerable populations, and the intersection of gender and criminal justice. Notable projects include evaluations of Drug Recovery Wings in prisons and studies on Spice use among released offenders. She has authored over 14 peer-reviewed publications and serves on editorial boards for criminology journals.
Teaching: Leads modules on criminal justice policy and drug policy at the University of York. Supervises PhD students focusing on criminal justice reform, substance use interventions, and gendered approaches to policy.
Grants & Collaborations: Co-investigator on ESRC grants totaling £2.5M+, including projects on policing cannabis possession and sex worker liaison roles. Active in international research networks addressing gender and criminal justice.
Labs/Teams: Core member of the Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre and the Criminal Women research network, which produced the seminal book Criminal Women: Gender Matters (2022).
