Professor Adam Crawford holds a dual appointment as Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice at the University of Leeds (25%) and Chair in Policing and Social Justice at the University of York (75%). He is Co-Director of the £10M ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre, a collaborative initiative between York and Leeds. His roles include Deputy Associate Dean for Research (Impact & Knowledge Exchange) at York’s Faculty of Social Sciences and former Director of Leeds’ Social Sciences Institute (2015–2021).
He specializes in policing, urban security, and restorative justice, with a focus on co-production of research to influence frontline policing. His work bridges academia and practice, evidenced by over £25M in secured funding and leadership roles such as founding Director of the N8 Policing Research Partnership (2013–2020).
Education: BA (First Class) in Law & Sociology from Warwick University, MPhil in Criminology (Cambridge), PhD (Leeds). Professional Recognition: Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, Honorary Lifetime Member of the British Society of Criminology. Current research includes the EU Horizon 2020 IcARUS project on urban security and evaluation of vulnerability-focused policing strategies.
Awards include the Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship and contributions to the Police Scientific Advisory Council. His advisory roles include the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) and editorial leadership for Criminology and Criminal Justice. He supervises PhD students in areas like policing responses to domestic violence and vulnerability.
