Professor Andrew Cundy holds the Chair in Environmental Radiochemistry at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton. He leads the GAU-Radioanalytical consultancy unit and serves as UK Discipline Lead for Radiochemistry in the Nuclear Waste Services Research Support Office (NWS-RSO). With a PhD in Geology (University of Southampton, 1994), his expertise spans environmental radioactivity, contaminated land management, and sediment geochemistry. He chairs UNESCO's IGCP Geohazards committee and collaborates internationally on sustainable remediation and nuclear decommissioning.
- Education: PhD in Geology, University of Southampton (1994)
- Key Research Groups: Geochemistry, NNUF-EXACT, and Nature-Based Ocean Solutions
- Active Projects: Includes EU Horizon-funded SURRI initiative and EPSRC-supported 2D-LC mass spectrometry advancements
Research focuses on pollutants (radioactive, metals, plastics) in aquatic/terrestrial systems, radiometric dating (²¹⁰Pb, ¹³⁷Cs), and Anthropocene stratigraphy. His work integrates novel remediation techniques with geohazard mitigation strategies.
External roles include consultancy on seagrass health, and leadership in global nuclear waste research networks. Current projects address tsunami coastal resilience, marine fuel impacts, and geopolymer-based environmental solutions.
