Professor Andrew Cundy is the Chair in Environmental Radiochemistry and Research Director of GAU-Radioanalytical at the University of Southampton's School of Ocean and Earth Science. He holds a PhD in Geology from the same institution (1994) and has over 30 years of experience in environmental contaminants research. His expertise spans radioactive and chemical pollutants, contaminated land/water management, sediment geochemistry, and radiometric dating. Current research emphasizes sustainable remediation strategies and nuclear waste management. He leads UK initiatives in radiochemistry and chairs UNESCO's IGCP Geohazards committee.
Key projects include Horizon Europe’s SURRI initiative, 3D-printed artificial reefs for marine environments, and EPSRC-funded NNUF-EXACT collaborations. Recent publications focus on microplastics in river sediments, tsunami mitigation through forested bioshields, and novel radioactive waste treatment methods. He supervises multiple PhD students across environmental science and engineering disciplines.
External roles include chairing the Anthropocene Working Group and advising on seagrass health projects. His work integrates geoscience, environmental engineering, and policy to address global challenges in pollution, disaster mitigation, and sustainable development.
