Professor Thomas Baldwin is affiliated with the School of Languages, Arts and Societies at the University of Sheffield. He holds a DPhil in French from the University of Oxford and previously served as Reader in French at the University of Kent. His academic leadership includes roles as General Editor of the MHRA/Legenda Research Monographs in French Studies series and membership on the Society for French Studies Executive Committee.

His research focuses on modern French literature, philosophy, and visual culture, particularly the intersections of critical theory, literature, and art. He is renowned for his work on Marcel Proust and Roland Barthes, examining text-image relations and theoretical frameworks in European intellectual traditions.
Recent publications explore Proustian ekphrasis, Barthesian semiotics, and interdisciplinary connections between literature, philosophy, and law. Collaborative projects with Professor Patrick ffrench investigate intersections of modern European literature and legal theory.
