Anat Keinan is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Questrom School of Business, Boston University. She earned her Ph.D. in Marketing with distinction from Columbia Business School and previously served on the faculty at Harvard Business School for over a decade. Her research spans branding, symbolic consumption, luxury marketing, consumer well-being, and ethical consumption.
Her research interests focus on how consumers derive meaning from brands and experiences, particularly in contexts of status, authenticity, and self-control. She explores symbolic consumption, the psychology of luxury, and how consumers make ethical and meaningful choices. Her work investigates the signaling value of time, the underdog effect in branding, and the emotional and social consequences of nonconformity.
The 15 most recent publications highlight a consistent focus on identity, status, and consumer psychology, often bridging marketing with social psychology. Her work frequently appears in top journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research and Journal of Marketing Research, covering themes like status pivoting, impostor syndrome in luxury consumption, and the red sneakers effect. The articles reflect a deep engagement with behavioral pricing, meaningful choice, and products as signals of identity.
