Amy Smith is a Professor of English at Kalamazoo College, where she has taught since 2002. Her role emphasizes undergraduate education, focusing on fostering intellectual risk-taking and student engagement. She holds a BA from Allegheny College, an MA (1997), and a PhD (2000) in English from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with specializations in Shakespeare, Renaissance literature, and Women’s Studies.
Her research interrogates how early modern institutions like marriage challenged class, gender, and national hierarchies. Her dissertation, *Performing Marriage in Early Modern England*, explores agency within social structures through literary and historical lenses. Ongoing work stems from this study, with articles forthcoming in *Studies in English Literature* and *Comparative Drama*.
Smith teaches courses on Shakespeare, global stages, early modern women writers, and materialist feminist literary analysis. She prioritizes interactive learning, blending rigor with supportive environments to encourage critical inquiry. Her pedagogical philosophy aligns with Kalamazoo College’s commitment to liberal arts education and study abroad programs, reflecting her own educational journey as an Allegheny College alumna who studied in England.
