Aaron W. Kitch is an Associate Professor of English at Bowdoin College, currently on leave for the 2024–2025 academic year. He specializes in early modern literature, with a focus on Shakespeare, Renaissance poetry, and the intersections of science, religion, and representation in early modern Europe. His research explores how scientific and religious thought shaped literary and cultural practices. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago, an MA from the University of Colorado-Boulder, and a BA from Yale University.
His recent work includes a forthcoming monograph, Shakespeare’s Theater of Nature, and an edited anthology on science and religion in early modern England. Ongoing projects investigate the emergence of racial categories in 16th- and 17th-century English natural history. He has presented at conferences such as the Shakespeare Association of America and the Modern Language Association, focusing on topics like medical thought, divination, and the materiality of science.
Teaching interests include English Renaissance literature, literary theory, and the art of conversation. He has reviewed works for Modern Philology and Renaissance Studies, and organized panels on medicine, science, and religion in early modern culture.
