Brian Lockey is a Professor of English at St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. John's University. His research focuses on early modern literature and culture, particularly Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, and legal imperialism. He has authored two monographs: Early Modern Catholics, Royalists, and Cosmopolitans (2015) and Law and Empire in English Renaissance Literature (2006).
- Education: Ph.D. in English Literature (1999, Rutgers University, specializing in 16th–17th century literature, Shakespeare, and critical theory), M.A. (1993, University of Sussex) with Distinction in Critical Theory, and B.A. (1991, Swarthmore College) with Honors in English Literature.
His work investigates the intersections of law, religion, and empire in Renaissance literature, analyzing texts like Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and Spenser’s The Faerie Queene. He co-edited a special issue of the Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies on Anglo-Spanish relations and has contributed to key reference works like the Oxford Handbook of Shakespeare.
Lockey’s recent articles explore themes such as colonialism, transnationalism, and Anglo-Portuguese connections. His research informs courses on Shakespeare’s Elizabethan and Jacobean plays, transatlantic English literatures, and graduate seminars on New World encounters. He has presented at major conferences including the Shakespeare Association of America and Renaissance Society of America.
