Professor Bart van Es holds dual roles as Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford and Senior Tutor at St Catherine's College. His research focuses on Early Modern literature, particularly Renaissance drama and poetry, with emphasis on historical contexts and material theatre practices. He has published extensively on Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser, and children's roles in literary culture.
His creative non-fiction work The Cut Out Girl (2018) explores a Jewish girl's WWII experiences in the Netherlands. Ongoing projects include 6 Ways of Thinking in Literature and a book on Shakespeare's comic actor Robert Armin. He supervises doctoral research in reception history and experimental academic writing.
