Professor Alistair Pike is a Professor of Archaeological Sciences at the University of Southampton. He holds academic leadership roles and has previously served as Head of Department and Head of Research. His expertise spans archaeological dating methods, isotopic analysis, and human mobility studies.
Educated at the University of Bradford (BSc Archaeological Sciences), he worked at English Heritage and the British Museum before completing his doctoral research at Oxford University on uranium-series dating of bone. His career includes eight years at the University of Bristol, where he led the Archaeology and Anthropology department.
Research focuses on developing dating techniques beyond radiocarbon limits, including U-Th dating of cave art, and using isotopes to reconstruct prehistoric lifeways. Active grants include projects on Neolithic social diversity, transhumance in the Western Alps, and Palaeolithic cave painting chronology.
Recipient of prestigious awards: Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2014) and Baguley Award (2016). Current supervises five PhD students in Archaeology, including two part-time candidates. Teaches courses on molecular archaeology, dating methods, and global heritage, contributing to modules in bioarchaeology and archaeological thought.
