Merita Dreshaj is a Chemical Analyst & Radiocarbon Bayesian Chronologist at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen. She specializes in radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis, and Bayesian statistical modeling applied to archaeological contexts. Her work focuses on understanding the emergence of animal husbandry, chronological frameworks in prehistoric societies, and interdisciplinary methods in archaeology.
Education:
- Erasmus Mundus MSc in Material Science Applied to Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (2017)
- MA in Archaeology (University of Zagreb, Croatia, 2016)
- BA in Philosophy & Archaeology (University of Zagreb, Croatia, 2014-2013)
Research interests center on archaeological chronology, prehistoric animal domestication, stable isotopes, and material science applications. She has pioneered high-resolution radiocarbon chronologies for Dutch wetlands and developed methodologies to address dating uncertainties in prehistoric contexts.
Her articles explore themes like pig husbandry in Neolithic Europe, zooarchaeological analysis of faunal remains, and interdisciplinary approaches combining genetics, isotopes, and Bayesian modeling. Recent work challenges assumptions about early agriculture timelines in Atlantic NW Europe.
Awards include the prestigious Erasmus Mundus scholarship and the City of Zagreb scholarship (top 1% award). She leads the NWO-funded 'Emergence of Domestic Animals in the Netherlands' project, collaborating internationally on archaeological chronology and material analysis.
Labs/Teams: Part of the Isotope Research group within the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (UG), collaborating with institutions like La Sapienza University and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
