Margot Kuitems is a Researcher in Isotope Research at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen. She specializes in radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology, and archaeological chronology. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable cities.
Her research focuses on reconstructing historical climate events, analyzing tree rings for solar activity patterns, and determining the chronology of archaeological sites. She has pioneered methods for dating wooden artifacts and analyzing isotopic signatures to trace historical human movements.
Recent work includes groundbreaking studies on Viking presence in Newfoundland (AD 1021), Egyptian chronology debates, and German solar minima. These projects combine radiocarbon dating with interdisciplinary approaches like genotyping and stable isotope analysis.
- Leading the CONTACT project (2023-2028) on Norse transatlantic colonies
- Contributor to the ECHOES project (2017-2022) on early societal chronology
Media highlights include global coverage of her 2022 Nature paper proving European presence in America centuries before Columbus.
